Thomas Moller-Nielsen was born and grew up in Brussels. He moved to the UK to study physics and philosophy as an undergraduate at the University of Bristol. He then did graduate work in the philosophy of physics at the University of Oxford, where he also worked for two years as a Stipendiary Lecturer before moving into journalism. He is currently based in Moscow.
