William Thomas is the author of Unsafe for Democracy: World War I and the U.S. Justice Department's Covert Campaign to Suppress Dissent (University of Wisconsin Press, 2008). He has a doctorate in history from the University of Iowa and teaches history at Bishop DuBourg High School in St. Louis, Missouri.
Martha H. Patterson is a professor of English at McKendree University. She is currently completing a manuscript entitled The Harlem Renaissance, Weekly and is editing a comprehensive collection of essays on the New Negro from 1887 to 1933 with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Gene Andrew Jarrett.
